"YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LIKE THEM"
ca. 1921

The P. Lorillard Company was at a disadvantage when they received only the expensive straight-Turkish tobacco brands following the 1911 dissolution of The American Tobacco Company trust. By the beginning of the First World War many smokers had already switched to one of the modern "American Blend" cigarettes. In order to compete, it was necessary for Lorillard to introduce a cigarette with a taste and price similar to Camel, Lucky Strike or Chesterfield. Launched in 1921, new Beech-Nut Cigarettes were promoted with the slogan "You can't help but like them." However, a successful 'American blend' cigarette eluded Lorillard until 1926 when a reblended and repackaged Old Gold, an old-timer that dated from the 1880's, was offered to smokers.
