Contributed by Mary Shelton F. German and C. Ellis have been subpoenaed on the horse theft case at Glenwood. In the case of the State of Wisconsin vs. Frank Ryan for horse stealing, which came off at Glenwood last week, the prisoner was bound over to the Circuit Court, which convenes at Hudson next Monday.
Coalfax Messenger, Aug 10, 1900 Contributed by Mary Shelton Eight structures, including saw, grist and planing mill go up in smke. Fire is reported to have broke out at about noon, Tuesday in the merchandise store of W. H. LeBell at Cartwright and spread so rapidly that before it could be extingished, eight structures, including general merchandise store of W. H. LeBell and a large saw and grist mill owned by C. E. Bitney were consumed and it was only by the heroic efforts of every man in the town that anything in its path was saved, the loss is estimated at $15,000.
Contributed by Debra McCann A second warrant was issued for the arrest of Peter McCann, a violator of the Sunday law, McCann's father came to John Olin, not to La Follette, and begged him to squash the indictment if his son promised to close his saloon and enter another profession. Olin, pleased at this turn of events, gladly relented.
Contributed by Debra McCann A crew of men with Henry McCann as foreman, started clearing away the forests on the lowlands above Jim Falls, extending 12 miles or almost up to Brunet Falls. Probably 500 acres will be cut off which will take many weeks preparing the site where the great dam will be built. Then will come the dam building and the canal.
Contributed by Debra McCann Jims Falls on the Boom. Next week the old McCann dwelling and barn will be moved back on the hill to be safe from the flowage. The crew will be domiciled at the Jims Falls hotel.
