CAWTHON
Posted on Feb 24, 2003 by Nick Scott

I am researching my mother's family which appears to have started in the late 1700's to early 1800's in Granville County, North Carolina as best we can determine. Her maiden name was Cawthon. Cawthon is spelled various ways. Indexes on Ancestry.com for US Census records in 1800, 1810, 1820, and 1830 spell it as Cothern, Cothan, Cauthon, Cortham, Cauthorn, Cauthan, Cothen, Cotharn, Cothran, Cawthorn, Cawthan, Cothron, Cothren, Cotham, Cothrum, Cothern. Who can I contact that may be willling to search the county records to see if there is any mention of a gentleman named Christopher C. Cawthon? His middle name may have been Christian. I am thinking perhaps in a probate or something of his parents. He would have been born around 1805 in "North Carolina". That's all we know. It appears most of the Cawthons were in Granville County. We have located him in 1830 and 1840 in Madison County, Tennessee, and in Marshall County, Mississippi in 1850. He died in 1853. We have no information about his parents or what county he was born in or exactly when he left North Carolina. Is there anyone who can help me? Thank you very much for your time. Nick Scott

Fannie was the daughter of a slave and the master. She had a sister named, Alice and 2 white half brothers. One of them was a white doctor who always took care of her and treated her as a sister. It was kept hush hush among the family during that time, but everyone knew. My grandmother never met Charles Webb, so he must have died before 1940. He was very tall and very dark skinned. Mattie's father was Richard "Dick" Watkins (b. 1858 Clarkesville, VA d. 1934? Oxford, NC). Jessie doesn't recall her grandmother's name. But Mattie did have siblings. Some are Adolphus, Elizabeth, and Naomi Watkins. If you have any information that would be helpful, please let me know. I can be reached at hollomr@dbcc.edu or kipperblue68@hotmail.com. Perhaps I will be able to assist you as well. Renee Holloman

My grandmother, Gertrude Royster Nichols, was the youngest of 14 children. Some of her siblings were James, Bessie, and Bertha. Balam and Rosie moved to Greenville, MS. I don't know the year, but they were there when my father was born in 1912. Rosie died in 1913. I found Balam in the 1880 North Carolina census, but there is no mention of Rosie. However, a Patience Royster is listed as a member of the household. Any information would be appreciated.

BLACKWELL, DANIEL
Posted on Feb 1, 2004 by Rose Allgood

I am trying to learn the parentage of Caroline Blackwell who married George W. Daniel about 1849. I found the couple on the 1850 census at the age of 22 living on the same property as James Elliott in the County Line District. I assume George was a hired hand or a tenant farmer. Next door was John and Vina Blackwell as owners of farm land in Granville County. On this census John was listed at age 50, which would be about the right age for parentage. Any help to identify the parentage of Caroline would be greatly appreciated. Rose Allgood

I am interested in John Miner (Minor) who supposedly was born in Granville County about 1760. He married Mary Kaleer who was born about 1765. They had several children including Joseph B. Miner who was born in Granville County in 1798. I believe John moved his family towards Kosciusko County, Indiana a little after 1800. I have found in the N.C. records that John had sworn allegiance to N.C. at Granville County on May 30, 1778. I do not know where John was from or who his parents were. He must not have been born there, as I was told, because he had to swear allegiance to N.C.

My name is Connie Sneed. I am doing research on the Sneed/Snead family tree. I am hoping you will have some information on my family. The following information is what I have. My ggrandfather was Lawson Sneed born around 1848. He married A Frances (Fannie) Green. They married in 1883 in Texas. Lawson had a older brother his name was Anderson Sneed Jr. He was born in 1826-1827 in GA. They were listed together on a Florida census when Lawson was 13. (1860 census) We also were told Anderson Sr. was born around 1780-1827. We are not sure where. Anderson Sneed Sr was said to have married a Hetta Sanders. We were also told they were related to a Robert Whitehurst Sneed. We have yet to make that connection. Was also told they originated from around North Carolina. The link could be through the Hawkins and Fogleman families. We know Anderson Sneed married Elizabeth Howard Aug 24 1843. They had 3 children. 1. Hetty 1845 2. Susan 1848 3. William 1849. We found later that an Anderson Sneed married a Harriet Kemp on Jan 20 1861. They had one son named Walter E. Sneed. Born around 1868 in Florida. Harriets parents were Elias and Mary Kemp. Any info would be appreciated. Thank You, Connie Sneed cfsneed@yahoo.com

Can someone tell me what a document titled "Report of years support 1872" means? It was done the same time as an inventory for Joseph McDonald Satterwhite was done just after his death in Granville Co. The document lists his belongings but goes on to say that the commissioners are appointed to lay off her (the widow's) years of support. And it leaves a deficit of $187. What kind of document is this and why was it done. Minor children were left. Does it have to do with their number of years before attaining adulthood? Judie Satterwhite Balacke

I am trying to find more information on a Philip Jean (also Jane and Gean) who was in Bute as early as 1769 according to deeds. His Brother (?) William later lived in Granville and Warren. Philip owned land on Crooked Creek, Bute county, which adjoined land of John Young, and he sold parts to William Fish and to Thomas Clifton (1769 and 1770). Have not located a deed where Philip obtained this land. There was also a land grant 1779, on Little River, joining Osborn Jeffries, William Jeffries and Thomas Clifton also bought land joining this property. Philip assigned this property to William Jeffries. These are the only records I've found on this Philip in Bute. This is not the Philip Jean who was Guilford County, and served in the Rev. War. Looking for any bit of information, and the name is often misread as Grane, Grave, and misspelled as is Jains, Jeone, etc. Thanks, Renee Newman, drnewman6@yahoo.com

I'm trying to locate Drewry Herndon, who was married to Sallie Hicks. They had four children: Mary, Jesse, Samuel, and James Herndon. The males show up in delayed birth records (1885 to 1890). I'm trying to find out if he owned a farm and whether he died there. I believe that he lived in Oxford. I'm trying to locate Sally (Hicks) Herndon as well. Drewry and Sallie were both from Virginia. I'm also trying to locate Robert Baskerville, who lived in Oxford. He was married to Mary Herndon, and shows up in the 1910 and 1920 census as residing at 46 Granville Street. The census says that he was an owner so I assume that he had a farm. How can I look up owners of property for this period? Thank you, James J. Baskerville

SPENCER

Hi Debra I'm helping an African American family do their genealogy . They were long time Oxford residents other areas of the county they lived in were Walnut Grove, Oak Hill, Sassafras Fork, Tally Ho, Fishing Creek. Their last name is Spencer. The earliest I have found was a mother Darkee b. 1810 her son David/Daniel Spencer had a brother Wesley Y. Spencer who had many children. A son Lunsford Pascal ( Lundy) also had many children who appear to have stayed in the area. Any info that I can find would be helpfull. I have done all the search venues possible on Ancestry.com and now need to flesh it out or find actual living relations. Thanks so much, Stephen Sanford, for the Spencer family

HARRIS

I would like to find out if the Solomon Harris shown in Granville County, NC, in the 1800 census is the same person as our ancestor, Solomon Harris, married to Nancy Blackwell about 1797. They later lived in Surry County, NC, and Garrard County, KY. Their son, Solomon Jefferson Harris, moved to Missouri in the mid-1800s. Are there any other records in Granville County, land or marriage, pertaining to this couple? Liz Craven
